Flora Plaza: Openness and Symbiosis – Reimagining a Spiritual Corner

Flora Plaza is located at the heart of Dounan Village and serves as one of its most important public gathering spaces. The core of the renovation lies in removing enclosing walls and cluttered temporary structures, transforming the formerly closed-off area into an open space that naturally integrates with the surrounding community. The goal is to reestablish the plaza as a central hub for daily interaction and activities among residents.

Key historical landmarks such as the water tower, ancestral hall, and opera stage are preserved, blending local cultural heritage with renewed spatial experiences.

In terms of design, the masterplan introduces retractable sunshades and a unified metal frame to organize and clean up the façades around the plaza. Ground-level storefronts are opened up to face the square, encouraging greater commercial activity. A portion of the plaza is planted with a grid of trees, symbolizing the regeneration of a forest and enhancing the natural atmosphere of the space.

The renovation is more than just a physical transformation—it aims to rebuild the relationship between residents and public space. By introducing open zones and diverse community functions, Flora Plaza is redefined as a multi-functional public venue, hosting everyday life, artistic expression, and seasonal festivities. While carrying the weight of collective memory, it also breathes new energy into the local community.
